In 1999, the National Institute for Medical Rehabilitation of Hungary and two departments of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (Department of Manufacturing Science and Engineering and Department of Applied Mechanics) together with three foreign partners were granted funds in the Fifth RTD Framework Programme of the European Union for the development  of an upper limb motion therapy supporting robot system for stroke patients. This was the REHAROB project. The work was successfully accomplished between 2000 and 2003, and was followed by new projects leading to the permanent cooperation between the two institute. Through the years (between 2000 and 2019), besides the numerous national partner, 28 institute from 13 countries participated in the R&D work.  The common in these project is the seeking of advanced technology based solutions for supporting the rehabilitation in the field of function recovery or assistive technology. Several Ph.D. theses, many bachelor and master theses (both medical and engineering)  theses were written in connection with the cooperation.
